Supporting Foster Care through Micro-enterprise:

Equipping African families to care for orphans is the best way to break the cycle of poverty and to provide a family, love and care for the children.

Through CARE4Kids (ISA) UGANDA, one of ISA’s programs in Africa, gifts or loans to establish small income-generating businesses are provided to families, enabling them to provide for themselves and to take care of children in a foster-care arrangement.

Currently the program supports numerous foster families in rural communities within the Jinja District of UGANDA.

As a result the family or community generate income, move towards greater self-sufficiency and experience the benefits of working together, achieving an outcome, and realise they do have the resources to care for the orphaned and needy children in their community.

Farming/Agriculture:

ISA lease various agricultural sites within reach of communities and make them available for food cultivation. The produce from this land assists in providing the children with healthy meals and is also a means of generating income.

We also work with some of our foster carers who have land which is not used productively. When they are provided with enhanced agricultural skills, materials and equipment they are able to use their land to generate greater self-reliance.

Piggery Project:

Piggery Project’s provide foster families and widows the opportunity to start a small pig farm. Often beginning with the loan or gift of two pigs, in a short time some of the off-spring of those pigs can be sold. The original loan of two pigs is often repaid or gifted to another community, and some of the litter kept to produce more pigs.

In the Kikuku community, for example, 15 widows have joined together to establish Hope Women’s Project and are already enjoying the benefits of micro-enterprise through a Piggery Project.

Poultry Project:

Poultry Projects, where chickens are breed to be sold or used for food for the children, have also been established. Many other projects are also under consideration with the goal of achieving sustainable self-sufficiency.

Water Project

in some rural communities up to 80% of the population does not have access to clean water. This results in the death of 6000 children daily, due to drinking polluted or contaminated water. Women and children walk 6 km a day on average to fetch water carrying approximately 20 kg’s over this distance. 1.8 million people die each year from diarrhoea, and 90% of them are under five years of age. With the help of general public donations and corporate sponsors ISA can assist in establishing bore-holes to provide access to clean water. You can make a significant difference by making a donation today and taking part in transforming lives in rural communities in Uganda.
